Char Dham by helicopter

After Dussehra, the Clock Starts: Flying Char Dham and Do Dham in the Season’s Final Weeks

Dussehra falls on 20 October 2026. For pilgrims planning a late-season trip to the Himalayan shrines, it is a date worth watching. Last year, the winter closing dates of all four shrines were announced on this very day.

This guide is for anyone hoping to fly Char Dham by helicopter or take a shorter Do Dham route, before winter. It explains what is confirmed, what is still expected, and what to check before you pay.

What Is Confirmed and What Is Still Expected

Anyone planning Char Dham by helicopter this late in the year should separate official dates from past patterns before booking anything.

This table will be updated once the temple authorities publish the 2026 dates.

  • Dates were announced on Vijayadashami in 2025: Last year, the temple authorities announced the closing dates for all four shrines on that day. This is a past pattern, not a promise for 2026.
  • Kedarnath traditionally closes on Bhai Dooj: The temple followed this custom in 2025 as well. The exact 2026 date still needs official confirmation from the temple committee.
  • Closing dates can differ by weeks: In 2025, Kedarnath closed on 23 October, while Badrinath closed on 25 November. Do not assume all four shrines close together.
  • Demand stays strong late in the season: By early October 2025, more than 4.5 million devotees had visited the four shrines since the Yatra began on 30 April.

Until the 2026 dates are official, treat the 2025 dates as background only.

Char Dham or Do Dham: Choosing by Your Dates

Your choice depends on two things: which shrines are still open on your dates, and whether flights are running then.

Full Char Dham Late in the Season

  • It needs more days: The four-shrine route includes night halts near the shrines. Late-season weather can stretch the plan, so keep at least one spare day.
  • It depends on the earliest closing: In 2025, Gangotri and Yamunotri closed first. If that repeats, a full circuit works best in the days soon after Dussehra.

Do Dham as a Shorter Option

  • It covers only Kedarnath and Badrinath: This shorter route suits travellers with fewer days, or families with elderly parents who would rather take fewer flights.
  • It is not automatically available later: Badrinath stayed open longer in 2025, but a Do Dham trip still needs both shrines open and flights confirmed for your dates.

If you start planning after Dussehra, compare the official dates and available flights before choosing either route.

What Late-Season Flying Involves

Late-season helicopter operations still depend on mountain weather, visibility and operating conditions. Confirm the schedule for your travel dates before booking.

  • Weather sets the schedule: The Ministry of Civil Aviation describes the Char Dham sector as a hard flying zone, with fast weather changes, narrow valleys and limited operating windows.
  • Load limits applied in 2026: During the first phase of 2026 operations, passenger loads were capped at 70% of maximum permissible capacity as an added safety measure.
  • Tracking was used across the Yatra: In the same phase, every helicopter operating on the Yatra carried a tracking device, with central monitoring from command centres.
  • Shuttle demand was high: From April to 26 June 2026, 12,032 shuttle departures carried 67,064 pilgrims, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
  • Shorter days may change timings: Daylight shrinks as winter nears. Flight slots may shift, so a missed slot could move your darshan to the next day.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has said, “Safety in aviation is our utmost priority, and there can never be any compromise on it.” Keep a spare day in your plan, and treat every flight time as weather-dependent.

Booking Checklist Before You Pay

A few clear questions now can save you from a rushed or failed trip later.

  • Check feasibility, not just dates: Whether a route works depends on your departure point, confirmed operating dates, trip length, and whether stays and transfers are included.
  • Know who books what: Kedarnath shuttle tickets are sold through IRCTC HeliYatra, while packages may add stays, transfers, or charters. Ask which parts your package actually covers.
  • Check every inclusion: A Char Dham helicopter package may or may not include flights, stays, meals, darshan support and road transfers. Get the full list in writing.
  • Ask the weather question: Before you sign up for any Char Dham yatra by helicopter package, ask what happens if weather delays or cancels a flight, and how refunds work.
  • Register before you leave: The Uttarakhand government makes registration compulsory. Download your Yatra Registration Letter and keep it ready at verification points along the route.
  • See a doctor first: A helicopter shortens the journey, but it does not remove the effects of high altitude. Elderly travellers should get medical advice before booking.

If you would like help with these checks, share your dates with the Fly With Ananta team and ask what can be arranged.

Plan With Confirmed Dates, Not Assumptions

Dussehra is an important date to watch, but final travel decisions should depend on confirmed temple dates and flight availability. In 2025, the closing dates were announced on Vijayadashami, and the four shrines closed weeks apart. The 2026 dates may follow a similar pattern, but only the temple authorities can confirm them. If you hope to fly Char Dham by helicopter this year, check the official dates, confirm flights for your travel days, and keep one spare day for weather. If time is short, compare Char Dham and Do Dham against those confirmed dates. Planning a late-season pilgrimage? Contact the Fly With Ananta team with your preferred travel dates, the shrines you wish to visit and the time you have. Ask them to confirm itinerary feasibility, operating schedules, package inclusions, and weather-related rescheduling and refund terms before you book.

FAQs

1. Have the 2026 Char Dham closing dates been announced?

As of 14 October 2026, not yet. In 2025, they were announced on Vijayadashami, which falls on 20 October this year. Kedarnath traditionally closes on Bhai Dooj. Please always check the official temple announcement before making any final travel booking.

2. Can I still book after Dussehra?

Possibly, but it depends on the official closing dates and on flights operating for your chosen days. Confirm both before paying. Keep one spare day in your plan, because mountain weather can delay flights at any point in the season.

3. What happens if weather cancels my flight?

Flights in this region depend on clear weather, and safety comes first. Your flight may be moved to the next available slot. Before paying, ask Fly With Ananta to explain its rescheduling and refund terms for your dates in writing.

4. Is Do Dham easier to plan in November?

It can be, as it covers only Kedarnath and Badrinath and needs fewer days. In 2025, Badrinath stayed open until 25 November. Still, both shrines must be open, and flights must be confirmed for your dates in 2026.

5. Can elderly parents fly in the final weeks?

Many elderly pilgrims do fly, but cold and altitude still affect the body. Please consult a doctor before booking. Pack warm layers, carry regular medicines, and choose a plan with rest time between shrines rather than a rushed, tight schedule.
